The New School for Social Research presents the Fall 2020 Hans Maeder Lecture featuring Roy Brooks, Warren Distinguished Professor of Law, University of San Diego.

Prof. Brooks will map competing scholarly approaches or strategies for redressing the nation’s original sin. These approaches have yet to find expression in the public’s overly simplified discussion of slave redress, or “reparations” in common parlance. The talk will underscore the complexity of the matter and the intellectual work that needs to be done going forward.

Professor Roy L. Brooks is the Warren Distinguished Professor of Law at University of San Diego School of Law. A graduate of Yale Law School, Professor Brooks teaches and writes in the areas of civil procedure, civil rights, jurisprudence, international human rights, and critical theory. He is the author of more than 110 articles and over 20 books, including The Racial Glass Ceiling: Subordination in American Law and Culture, published by Yale University Press; Integration or Separation? A Strategy for Racial Equality, published by Harvard University Press; Racial Justice in the Age of Obama, published by Princeton University Press; Atonement and Forgiveness: A New Model for Black Reparations, published by University of California Press; and The Law of Discrimination: Cases and Perspectives (with Carrasco and Selmi), published by Lexis/Nexis. His next book, Diversity Judgments, will be published by Cambridge University Press.
